can i put diluted tcp on my irritated eye?

Accepted Answer

Not a good idea: TCP contains phenols and is not recommended for use on any internal issue in the body.  It would no doubt be quite painful on an irritated eye and certainly not do it any good.  Try over the counter anti-histamine drops as a starter and see an ophthalmologist if persistent.

Slang: Pink eye is also known medically as  conjunctivitis.  Both irritated eyes and pink eye can have similar symptoms.  Ophthalmologists often look for the presence of inflammed lymph nodes for conjunctivitis.  Allergy follows a different pattern in terms of symptoms and can cause much more itching.  All can create watery irritated eyes.  Your local eye specialist can help.

Red eye: If simple redness, try visine over the counter.  However, if it bacterial conjunctivitis (Bacterial pink eye) than it would require an antibiotic to treat it.  Keep your hands clean always and best wishes.

Not really: Those 3 are very similar when it comes to symptoms, however on an eye exam, they are very different. Usually the primary care doctors give anti allergy drops for all 3 and if it doesn't work them they send it to an eye doctor. However, keep in mind that pink eye is contagious, so you want to get an accurate diagnosis.

is getting a very irritated eye after biking in the wind the same thing as a corneal abrasion?

No: A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. After biking your eyes are likely dry from all the wind and that is causing the irritation. Artificial tears may help.

See an opthamologist: For a definitive diagnosis you should see an opthamologist. The differential diagnosis of an irritated eye is large and encompasses everything from foreign bodies to allergies to infections to autoimmune processes. The finding of a visibile change around the iris also warrants evaluation by someone in person.

how do you soothe an extremely irritated eye? like an idiot, i grabbed what i thought was visine yesteray, and instead it was that stuff called swim ear. my eye burned like crazy. i immediately flushed it out with water f course. i can see out of it fine

You : You have a form of chemical conjunctivitis.  Some drops for swimmer's ear have alcohol in them in addition to antibiotics - this helps dry out the ear canal.

I would use artificial tears (for the eye) 4 times daily.  You should lay low today.  If you do not detect serious improvment by the morning, i would arrange for evaluation by your local eye doctor.  However, i expect no serious longterm problems.

In general, most eye doctors do not like use of visine.

i've had a cold for 3 wks, 3 days ago sinuses burned next day herpe breakout on chin next day irritated eye that swelled  shut red & draining. ideas?

See MD: You need to see an md. You may need oral antiviral therapy for your infection. The cold you had increasesd your susceptibility to other opportunistic infections such as the herpes. I'm concerned that you may also have gotten it near or in your eye.

i found out today at the eye doctor that i have an inflamed cornea and irritated eye. should i wear contact lenses?

Accepted Answer

NO: Don't put them back in until you are healed, you could turn an irritation into an ulcer. Wear your glasses.
