what are the side effects of taking iron supplements?

Mostly GI Distress: Side effects from taking iron supplements are most often diarrhea or constipation and epigastric abdominal discomfort. Taken after a meal, side effects decrease, but there is an increased risk of interaction with other substances. Black stools are not uncommon, but harmless.  Liquid form can discolor the teeth and intramuscular injections can be painful and leave a brown discoloration.

my doctor  gave me iron supplements ( im anemic and preg) an also an uti so he prescribed  keflex. will have any side effects by taking both?

NONE: There is no drug-drug interaction between Keflex and iron supllement.

Not common: The only 2 ways I can imagine your weight loss is tied to iron supplements are:
1.  You have some nausea from the iron so you are not eating as much, or
2.  You have more energy from not being anemic so your are more active and burning more calories.
I would get evaluated to make sure it is nothing else.

when i attempt to donate blood, i always lack enough iron in my blood for my height/weight group (i usually come really close to the level necessary but don't quite reach it), does this mean i should consider taking iron supplements?

Blood donation: No you need to find out what is causing this and treat that. It might be iron but can be many things.

i have gerd and am on nexium but keep getting this recurring burning sensation in the entire right side of my body (side of face, pinky toe and pinky in hand, thigh). i am iron deficient and am on iron supplements right now.

Neurologic: GERD or Nexium does not cause the type of symptoms you are describing.  I am concerned as to why a young male ( unless you have been a vegan for many years) would develop iron-deficiency anemia. Your best bet is to consult a neurologist. The fact that the entire half (including the face) is affected however does not make sense neurologically either.

Yes: And it can be fatal.  You do not need iron supplements unless you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency.

: Suggest you contact the store where purchased, and ask the local pharmacist if present, why there is an aroma to your supplements.  Alternatively, you could contact manufacturer via phone, email, or snail mail.

Iron supplement: Iron is not known to increase appetite. Instead, it  may cause dyspepsia, bloating thereby decreased appetite. Good for you bcoz you will not quit taking it. It can also cause constipation or sometimes diarrhea.

Freely available: The key is to find out why you're iron deficient. If you are replacing heavy monthly losses or blood donated, this is a reasonable choice. I trust that by "low iron" you mean an actual diagnosis of clinical iron deficiency rather than  simply anemia. Remember that iron deficiency may also warn of stomach ulcer or tumor, colon tumor, or other illness.
