Nerve damage: The usual causes are peripheral neuropathy related to commonly diabetes. There are also hereditary neuropathies and neuropathies related to systemic illness as renal failure and other conective tissue diseases. If it is just in one arm or leg look to evaluate for nerve damage as in radiculopathy related to degenerative arthritis or disc disease.

i think i have ulnar nerve palsy which i believe has started muscle wasting in my hand. i am making an appointment to get this checked out. is this damage reversible?

: The diagnosis of ulnar nerve damage can be confirmed by an EMG/ NCS.  If you have a mechanical compression at elbow or wrist, a decompression should satisfactorily reverse.  If you have diabetes, this too can be handled, but treatment will be different.

What is harayama?: My apologies, but what is harayama?  Pain and muscle wasting often correlates with nerve compression.  Depending on what muscles are affected and where the pain is, you may have nerve compression.  For an arm, nerve compression often occurs at the wrist (median nerve), elbow (ulnar nerve) or upper arm (radial nerve).

However, these muscles are delicate and can be strained or injured with overuse.  If you really need to improve hand strength I would suggest a referral to a hand therapist who could advise you on the best way to improve grip

Many causes: It depends what kind of repetitive work you are doing. If it is typing and persistent hand pain, try a better ergonomic positioning of your wrist  with cushion under your wrist. If pain persists , consider an x-ray to rule out fracture or arthritis. If negative , consider peripheral nerve conduction study to rule out carpal tunnel syndrome. If you do physical work, it could be arthritis or muscula.
