Now, some lists are only online, and no longer printed. Ask friends/family: If someone you knows goes to an internist and recommends that doctor, you could start there. The local medical society, and local hospitals also help connect people to doctors. Hospitals usually steer inquires to doctors on their staff.  Hospital privileges are awarded to doctors who have to have proper credentials, which gives some assurance of competency.

Either: Either specialties can provide good primary care.  Sometimes those with multiple complex medical issues go to Internal Medicine Specialist, but many Family Doctors feel comfortable handling them also.  Depending on you local medical community, sometimes Family Doctor provides more outpatient related care, while the Internist is more likely to provide hospital based services.

Older too: He just gets older too.  I really dont understand the question.  Possibly why do older people need internist ?  Internal medicine is a field in which focus is placed on adult medicine and geriatrics and the chronic disease process which go along with aging.  They usually do not see kids, do ob/gyn, deal with orthopedics like fps do, but devote all their time to internal disease diagnosis and treat.

Depends...: If you have multiple medical illnesses and you take many medications, i like to have my patients check in before they go so that they have a plan for refills, monitoring labs, etc.  If you're going abroad, it's also good to check in to make sure you have the necessary immunizations.  If you're young, healthy, not going abroad, and take no meds that need refills.... No need to see doc!

Sure : In the us after completing a 3 year residency in internal medicine (im), the internist can go on to complete a fellowship in one of the sub-specialty fields of im. A few complete a combined program and some go on to specialize in a non-internal medicine field (e.g. Anesthesia, surgery, radiology, etc.). Many internists are quadruple board certified (e.g. Int med, pulmonary critical care, sleep).
