i've been finding lately that if i eat spicy food i get stomach pain almost right away. it seems to be right where my stomach is. not heartburn but a gnawing feeling right below my last rib. what could this be?

Sounds like: you may have a gastric or duodenal ulcer. or gastritis ..One simple test (Upper GI endoscopy) and /or contrast imaging  will give the important answer. Its important since specific treatment is available after diagnosis!

It could be: Many minor stomach pain issues after eating certain kinds of foods can be explained away by common indigestion.

The chemicals in spicy food irritate the sensitive ulcer, which may respond by becoming inflamed or even by bleeding.
Depending on the ingredients used to make the spicy food you've eaten, the chemical capsaicin may be the culprit. Found naturally in chilies.

Severe = Go to Dr!: If you have severe pain, then you should be seen now.   Typically severe pain needs to be evaluated in urgent care or the ER.

Cool foods: First learn not to eat spicy foods. Zantac (ranitidine) may help as may antacids like tums. Cool foods like cucumbers and pears may also offer some relief. Peppermint oil may also offer some relief as it s great for digestive issues. Homeopathic nux vomica may also be useful.

GALLBLADDER?: Common is common.  Usually, "spicy" foods are  also greasy.  Upper abdominal pain and flatulence are two classic symptoms of gallbladder dysfunction, and are made more severe with fatty food intake.  Discuss this with your doctor.  In the meantime, i suggest a lower fat diet to see if your symptoms lessen.  Good luck.

Heartburn: Spicy foods are known to cause heartburn. This is usually easily treated with over the counter remedies such as antacids. Check with the pharmacist about interactions if you are taking other medications and still no better, see your doctor
