i can't stop scratching insect bites and these always cause me wounds. they heal quickly but they leave dark scars. what medicines can i apply or take?

Try Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or: cover with Neosporin and a bandaid. Distract yourself from scratching. Once they are scratched vitamin E or Me derm may help. Avoid touching as scratching makes it worse. All the best.

Leave them alone: Children's skin heals quickly. Give it time. Even a scar from a cut may fade away over a year or two. Keep it clean, avoid scratching and picking, and use a good sunscreen (depending on the age of your baby). If you have concerns, check with your baby's doctor.

P.I.H. : Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a frequently encountered problem particularly in darker pigmented individuals including african americans or asians. Pih occurs as a result of inflammation to skin. Acne is common inflammatory diseases that results in pih, particularly if one picks at their lesions.  Time usually helps fade the PIH. There are lasers that can also help. Hope this helps.

Possible: but depends on whether the site has been deeply scratched or infected or not. Most bite scar will resolve with time (weeks or months).  Bleaching agent (not your laundry bleach) may reduce the pigment but it is best to leave it alone.

Scars;VitaminE: Life holds no guarantees as we know, but vitamin e oil placed directly on the scar regularly can help to fade or remove the scar.  You can get a bottle of it in the drug store.  It's inexpensive and worth a try; just be patient.

No toothpaste won't : Toothpaste will not work.    You should see a plastic surgeon who can evaluate your scars and determine whether scar revision is necessary or if another non invasive treatment would be appropriate

See below: Cut and file smooth the finger nails. Topical anti itch creams include 1% hydrocortisone, calamine or Benadryl cream.  If truly red, swollen and itchy-a night time dose of oral antihistamine can be given to assist with the symptoms/swelling. Benadryl syrup/diphenhydramine is a choice at 2.5ml at night. (drowsy side effects are common).

is it true that petroleum jelly is good to minimize scars from insect bites, rash and open wounds?

Yes indeed!: The only thing really shown to help the healing process and minimize scarring is keeping a wound moist and covered. Most scar products accomplish this, however so does petroleum jelly. In two randomized comparison trials of mederma and petroleum jelly, mederma did not improve the appearance of scars any more than petroleum jelly, and vitamin e doesn’t do any better.

Won't prevent scar: But it will soften the area and help make it less noticeable.  Normal insect bites shouldn't scar unless scratched open if this is a problem too try putting some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) cream on and covering with band aid.  If you are dark pigmented and have dark scars try fade cream but don't use it close to your eyes.
