Not really: Going to physical therapy (or the gym) may strengthen your abdominal muscles, but it will not fix a hernia.  A hernia is a defined hole in the muscles and, once present, can only be fixed surgically.  Ironically, the exercises that strengthen the abdominal wall tend to worsen the hernia, due to the added strain.

i am a 63 yr old runner with a small inguinal hernia i am considering having repaired surgically.  how common is it for the mesh to interfere with running and other physical activities long term?

Speak w your surgeon: Most of the hernia surgeries are well tolerated without problems after regular healing. Since we don’t know  your own situation including prior surgeries and underlying health conditions I cannot be more specific. You may want to get a 2nd opinion and hear the same information from a,difference doc more familiar with your history. Good luck

Herniation: So, as you probably know, herniation (or a hernia) is where one structure comes through another structure.  Usually, this is not the ideal situation, and needs to be corrected.  I would see your doctor, who will probably refer you to a general surgeon for repair.  I would lighten up a bit on the weightlifting until you know what it is.  Good luck!

Yes. Get evaluated.: If the weakening of the abdominal wall allowing the hernia to bulge worsens, the hernia can get larger. The bulge is caused by  small intestine that has slid into the bulging hernia sac.  A hernia repair is indicated if there is significant bother, pain, or increased risk of incarceration (where the intestine is stuck), or strangulation (the intestine loses blood flow and becomes non-viable).

Not directly: Hernias do not have a direct affect on erectile function. Indirectly, the pressure or discomfort or swelling of a hernia could have secondary side effects on sexual function, just due to the uncomfortable symptoms from the hernia.

Straining : Raising the pressure in the abdomen with any activity (valsalva) can exert outward force on the hernia.   This will increase protrusion and over time the size of the defect.  If the hernia cannot be pushed back in, have it repaired expeditiously.  If it hurts or you have bloating, nausea or vomitting, it is an emergency.
Just get to general surgeon and have it fixed before you develop complication.

Hernia causes: The most common causes of hernia are exertion and hereditary reasons.  
Hernias are less common in women than in men.  I would be skeptical that intercourse would result in a hernia.

Yes: Many surgical reports for many years have documented hernia mesh safety & several reports indicate better long term hernia repair results with the use of mesh.

Yes.: A hernia is said to be incarcerated when a structure within the abdominal cavity gets "stuck" within the hernia.  If this happens to be a loop of intestine, this can cause blockage and lead to the blood supply of the intestine being cut-off; we call this a strangulated hernia.  If one has a large, tender lump in the groin that cannot be pushed back in, this requires emergency md attention.
