Different: Inflammation is like a bruise, with swelling and  infiltration of white blood cells. A nodule is a solid mass, which may be difficult to feel and need an ultrasound exam to discover.Episodes of inflammation can lead to the production of nodules.

Often none: With the most common  inflammation of the thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis-ht) the inflammation is chronic and bland, so there are no direct symptoms. Sometimes the thyroid can become enlarged and that can be felt by the patient. Subacute thyroiditis is an acute severe inflammation of the thyroid and patients can be very uncomfortable with severe neck pain and general flu-like symptom.

Thyroiditis: Several common forms of thyroiditis.   Subacute thyroidits is from a virus. Your thyroid is tender, transient hyperthyroidism, but then resolution. Hashimotos thyroiditis is usually without pain, eventually causes hypothyroidism, but can coexist with graves hyperthyroidism.  Two other forms are post partum thyroiditis and "painless" thyroiditis; transient hyper followed by hypo or normal thyroid.

Yes it's possible : But i'd say the latter 2 conditions more likley would provoke depression and not the other way around.I'd suggest u don't focus on your illness and do your usual activities. Some treatments...: Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is used in iodine deficiency. Hormone replacement decreases TSH and lets the thyroid recover. A large goiter that is not improving medical treatment or restricts swallowing/breathing may need partial or complete removal of the gland. If the goiter is making too much thyroid hormone, treatment with radioactive iodine, anti-thyroid meds, or surgery may be needed.

Mumps : mumps virus usually affect salivary glands and equal on both sides, should not be just on a left. Unrelated to Thyroid gland which is much lower, frontal portion of the neck. Are you sure about mumps diagnosis?
