Probably Gout : It may be Gout, which is an accumulation of Uric Acid crystals on your joint. It's more common on the big toes, then ankles and sometimes the knees. It's treated with Allopurinol, which binds the uric acid to the medication and prevents the crystals from forming. Eating red meats can be the culprit. It was called the Kings disease in Middle Ages.

If not: Other possible etiologies can include swelling from injury (like jamming a thumb), gout, fracture, arthritis, or infection.  However, the most common cause is still rigidus.  Recommend full evaluation by a podiatrist.

Big Toe Pain: Good morning. If there is a history of trauma, their is a higher incidence of early arthritic conditions such as Hallux Limitus that cause bone spurs to form in the big toe joint, limit motion, cause "bumps" to occur over the joint, and cause more pain with activity. An x-ray would be taken to evaluate the joint and surrounding bony structures.

If you in-CYST.: Suddenly appearing lumps, especially soft ones appearing on a joint , are usually cysts. Initially, they may not be painful or present any problems. If they get larger, their size may begin to affect the joints normal motion. If a nerve gets involved, there may be numbness or even pain. Give it a reasonable time to see  if it gets bigger. If concerned, then have it evaluated.

It stabilizes: The toe but doesn't allow bending. I can't tell you how it feels as i never had one, i only perform them, i think it's a good procedure when indicated.

Fungal infection: Perhaps this is a fungal infection of the toes.  Is the itching worse after wearing socks & shoes for several hours?  Is it worse at the end of the day (assuming you work daytime hours)? Any redness, irritation, peeling skin?  It doesn't have to have a foul odor.  If yes to most of these questions, consider a fungal infection. Try some otc remedies first.  If no improvement, see a podiatrist.
