Probably OK: Drug expiration dates reflect the time of proved safety and effectiveness. In almost all cases, the drug remains potent and safe for much longer (often many years), if it hasn't been exposed to high heat for long periods (like a car's glove compartment in summer). It's always safest to use drugs before the experiation date, but most likely the expired indomethacin will work just fine.

Indocin (indomethacin) is: An antiinflammatory. If you have gout you need to control your Uric acid levels. If you don't, you could potentially have recurring gout attacks. The Indocin (indomethacin) was to help alleviate the sequela of the gout attack but you should be looking to get the gout itself under control. (Actually, your doc should be looking to do this...)

No: It is not recommended that you take the 2 drugs together.

Accepted Answer

Yes!: But this treats the attack only.  You need to be on a uric-acid lowering agent.  Allopurinol or uloric (if renal probs exist, and/or probenencid, usually combined with colchine, so i lower pill burden for my patients!

i'm having my first gout flare as an active 24 y/o. i've been on indocin (indomethacin) for a week, but pain is still between a 6-8/10. should i ask for another med?

Is it really gout?: If you have involvement of the base of the great toe then the diagnosis will almost always be gout. However, if this joint has never been involved then i would see a rheumatologist. A joint can be aspirated and evaluation of the joint fluid would determine if it is gout or some other form of arthritis. If this is gout, a short course of Prednisone works well.

Acute Gout: You should be taking 50mg Indocin 3 times daily. Give it another day and if no improvement you see a doctor for different treatment.

Several things: Indocin (indomethacin) is an ant-inflamatory medication that will help to decrease the initial pain and swelling of a gout attack.

Consult Physician: Especially if medication did not help gout. Probably need to stop medication.
