Complicated shingles: Shingles complicated by a bacterial infection such as impetigo would benefit from a combination of prescription medications.  Pain management and avoidance of touching it as much as possible are preventative measures to take while you are waiting for evaluation.  Use new facial towels daily and wash them in very hot water!

Yes: You can use an over-the-counter scar product, or vitamin e oil. Avoid scratching. Avoid infection - keep all open sores clean.

good day, i currently have impetigo on my face an it is spreading.  i am currently using bactroban ointment, but it is still spreading.

May need more: Simple impetigo in a localized setting may respond to local treatment with bactroban. Cleansing the area with peroxide can assist in some cases. When the problem is not responding an oral antibiotic may be required as the germ may be colonizing hidden sites like the nasal passages that re-seed the problem.

my daughter has a big knot on her forehead that keeps swelling seems by the second, i know she has impetigo, so ive applied the topical ointment but it seems to not be working on her face like how it does on her skin.. any suggestions please?

Doesn't sound good: A preschooler with impetigo (skin infection) who then gets a skin lump that is swelling "by the second" sounds bad. It's possible that the forehead knot has no infection but is due to an unwitnessed head bonk on something hard. It's also possible that there is a fast growing abscess or cellulitis infection and injectable antibiotics are needed. Doctor's exam is needed to figure this one out.

4 year old was diagnosed with impetigo on his face and started cephalexin yesterday. he says its "itchy". what can i put on the spot to soothe it?

Wash: Try washing the area with soap/water and letting it dry out.  A non-irritating skin lotion may also provide some relief.  Try not to let him/her scratch the area too much!

Impetigo: Impetigo can take a very long time to heal but if it is worsening please see dermatologist.

Eczema treatment: If eczema is infected, it is often necessary to take oral antibiotics to help clear the exacerbation.

If around others: If she is around other children or siblings then covering it would be a good idea to prevent spread to others. If not around others then there isn't a need to cover it.

Impetigo: It could be impetigo, or bacterial cellulitis, which is a slightly less invasive skin infection, but both have a potential to become a life-threatening deep-skin infection, such as an abscess, boil, or furuncle. Make sure IV or oral antibiotics are used to clear the infections

i recently had an infection on my leg and i was prescribed mupirocin ointment usp,2 %. my question is can i use this antibiotic on my face as well? i believe i have a little infection, possibly impetigo.

Yes: It can be used in simple localized areas. However, if you are seeing such areas show up in a variety of sites your doc may need to prescribe an oral medication that will eradicate the germ from your system. People often carry staph colonies in their nasal passages where the will persist until treated.
