If : If you have methicillin resistant staph aureus isolated in a laboratory test; you doctor or one of his/her staff will normally be the person notifying you and they will advise you of what actions to take. Are you sure that you have MRSA in your blood, or have you been found to be a carrier?

No test : When the wound is healed, the infection is definitely gone. MRSA can be on our skin without causing infection. To detect MRSA living on your skin, colonization, you can have a swab culture done.

How do you know: Not all bacteria are mrsa, if you have no abvious infection or sign of an infection, there is no need to panic, you can simply see you doctor, when ever possible and have a nasal culture for mrsa; however, if you have high fever, an abscess, a spreading redness on your skin and you are feeling terribly sick, you should go to the nearest emergency department.

my dad had mrsa in april, cleared to go home and on vancomycin 2x/day for 1 month. going to see him with 8-mos. old baby july 1.  safe for baby?

MRSA: If you are concerned about this.  I would have your father discuss it with his doctor to find out if you should bring your daughter.  Some people can become carriers of MRSA but to give you that information, I would need more information about your father's infection. We also may have an infectious disease expert who could give you a better answer.

Cold sore: if OTC medication works well for your cold sores then use it. If it does not then see your doctor who can prescribe medication that can help.

More info: Colonization with MRSA is usually checked with a nasal swab. Infection in blood is checked in blood cultures  and sometimes wound cultures are taken if there is a wound. What are your symptoms and where is your infection?

See a dermatologist: Mrsa is a possibility but not necessarily a definitive occurrence in anyone who has breaks in the skin.  The skin and mucous membranes are our primary barrier against infection and impetigo compromises this barrier.  A dermatologist will help you deal with this.  Good luck.

No: You won't be contagious to anyone even if it is MRSA.  MRSA is everywhere in the community these days..its normal flora.  If you feel well enough..go to work.

Check out CDC: 1st the CDC (center for disease control) has a GREAT website resource for you.  Look up CDC MRSA.  You could be considered infectious.  Soap on your body may reduce MRSA, you may use alcohol to spot kill MRSA on your body.  Bleach will kill MRSA on floors etc.  Hot water and soap should reduce or neutralize most MRSA on laundry. MRSA now occurs in our environment- no way to "remove" it. Be well.

Yes: If a boil or abscess is present a specimen of the drainage or pus can be sent to the lab and a culture of the organisms is made. If staph aureus is grown on the culture then next it is grown on a culture with methicillin to see if the methicillin will inhibit growth of the staph. If growth not inhibited the staph aureus is methicillin .Resistant.
