May be allergy: It would be wise to see an allergist before considering another booster.Some people can develop a significant reaction to the tetanus toxoid used in the shot, or other components of the vaccine.

had an anaphylactic reaction to a tetanus shot when young; no one wants to give me a shot.  is there any way to test whether there really is an issue?

Allergist: An allergy specialist might be able to do this. But maybe not necessary. Tetanus is extremely rare. Although periodic re-immunization is wise, it's optional for most people not at special risk. Discuss the issues and possible referral with your primary care physician.

i just received a booster tetanus shot yesterday morning. tonight, i am running a 101 degree fever. is that a normal reaction?

Most likely yes: probably from shot. But look for other causes like for sore throat cough flu like symptoms urinary symptoms that may signify another infection. If fever last more than 24 hours check with your PCP

Not true: there is an adult tetanus vaccine that does not contain pertussis. Maybe the person who told him that doesn't have it, but it's available.  His local health department can provide it.

Tetanus shot: By all means you should get a tetanus shot and to be sure you are properly immunized you should have three a month apart. The only side effect might be a sore arm for a day or two

May have vaccine: Usually tetanus vaccinations are given every ten years.  Since you are dealing with the rusty paperclip, it would be reasonable to update sooner.  Make sure the area is clear of any infection and be seen to be placed on antibiotics if any redness or swelling is seen.

No tetanus risk: After a month, you are completely protected against tetanus. It sounds like you have correctly managed your wound and nothing more need be done. See a doctor if it doesn't seem to be healing properly after a few days.
