i have had 3 tias will a bleed show up on a mri without contrst or would it show up better with a mri with contrast? i am having more trouble with my balance , memory, speech and heart flurries

It : It depends on how long ago you bled.  Mri and ct will both show fresh blood without any contrast.

Symptoms and signs: Neurologist would be able to diagnose by signs and symptoms which are transient in tia. Ct scans and MRI cannot diagnose tia.

It depends: Both are very good at imaging various parts of the body.  Depending on the body part and the question being asked, ct or MRI may be better.  In general, MRI can "see" the soft tissues a little better (e.g.,  brain and spinal cord, rotator cuff) and ct is sometimes better for looking at the bones (e.g., facial fractures, sinuses).  Doctors work closely with radiologists to determine the best test.

Close, if there is: Enough contrast with adjacent structures.  Radiologists (physicians with 5 or more years of additional training after medical school) routinely identify pulmonary nodules in the lung down to 2 millimeters, and 1 mm nodules can sometimes be identified.

Certainly, 3 mm nodules are clearly seen at both ct and MRI in many organs, if different in appearance from the surrounding tissue.

Probably not: CT is pretty good to image the left side of the abdomen.  In this setting MRI is best for problem solving.  MRI is based on magnetic techniques. Images of the body: Ultrasound, ct, and MRI are three different types of imaging procedures which allow the radiologist see what's going on in your body.  Each modality has it's own strengths, weaknesses, and indications.  The best use of each is guided by the radiologist.  The radiologist interprets at the images and provides a report to your doctor.

Sometimes: Head ct and MRI can show shrinkage in certain brain areas, if that is extensive enough.  However. Deterioration of brain function in the form of dementia -- including alzheimer's -- develops and impacts the person's behavior long before physical effects show up on ct or MRI scans.  These scans would be only part of a workup for possible dementia, not the whole of it.

No: mri is the best test for imaging ligaments and tendons. ct is only good for bone

Yes: Mri provides better soft tissue detail than ct, particularly if the ct was performed without contrast, and could demonstrate a tumor not seen on ct.
