Basophils are not...: ...typically increased in cancer. They might increased in CML (chronic myelogenous leukemia) but that disease pretty easy to diagnose based on blood tests alone. Basophils may be involved with parasitic infections and as tissue mast cells, with allergic reactions. You didn't state why you had an ultrasound of your chest and armpits. Moderate swelling of lymph nodes is often a sign of infection.

had an ultrasound and there is one node that is 7mm in short axis with mild cortical thickening of up to 4mm. lymph node is peripherally hypoechoic with an echogenic center. pcp not really concerned. normal cbc. chronic tonsilitis. is this cancer?

: I think that your PCP  should sit down with the interpreting radiologist &amp; get his differential diagnosis  of  such lymphode findings. Are there other studies that would help or simple followup u/s only? What consultants would be helpful?  The basic question here is whether it's a reactive lymph node or one consistent with malignancy.

my son 15mnth went for ultrasound on lymph node he has for 2 months  it measured about 8mm and he is having cbc blood work today could it be cancer?

Swollen lymph node: Swollen lymph glands can be caused by many things like infection ( viral , bacterial, fungi etc) , inflammation, malignancy etc. Viral/bacterial upper respiratory infection  would be the most common cause of swollen lymph gland- especially in toddler. 8mm is small size of lymph gland. Don't worry.

i'm 38 . having spotting (light pink tinge red ) 5 days before period (3 cycles). cbc, pap, trans ultrasound normal. recommend further testing?

Follow-up: To be on the safe side I suggest keeping in touch with your gynecologist and following this up. A routine exam at regular intervals can help prevent progression of many conditions. Such routine exams can also check for pregnancy. Have a great day!

i have had a lump in groin for 3 months that has gotten more prominent. cbc, urinalysis, and sti testing normal. ultrasound showed four enlarged lymph nodes (all between 1 and 1.4 cm) but said presumptively, reactive lymphadenopathy. likely normal?

Common : From the size &amp; location it suggests you had a skin infection, bite or other trigger for lymph node activation within the area served by those nodes. In this case the leg or skin nearby in the groin. It does not suggest cancer.

my oncologist stopped my hormone inhibitor to do further testing (breast cancer) since then i have had extreme exhaustion. i take levothyroxine for thyroid. can stopping the hormone inhibitor affect my thyroid? cbc and urine test normal?

: Some chemotherapy can interfere with the thyroid's manufacture of thyroid hormone. You'll need a TSH,  T3 and T4 test to determine if your thyroid parameters are too low.

lymph nodes in the groin have been sore and swollen off and on the past few months. gyn did a cbc, urinalysis and metabolic panel -- everything normal. does that rule out cancer or anything serious?

No: Enlarged lymph nodes can occur from many different conditions. Lymph nodes commonly enlargen with infection; however, cancer is always suspected with persistently enlarged nodes. Please, go see a surgeon and have a full work up as this could be serious.
The blood work you had done cannot rule out "anything serious".

in a 72 year old women with normal cbc, cmp and c reactive protein, would an esr of 54 be alarming? the test was run to rule out autoimmune causes of hearing loss. im worried about cancer. does this sound like cancer? thanks?

: ESR is a test usually signaling non specific inflammation when elevated. Your ordering doc will be best to place your value in the context of hearing loss, actual physical exam and detailed history.

is it possible to fail to detect gastric cancer after ct with and without contrast/barium study, pet ct, cbc, metabolic testing, abdominal ultrasound, alpha feta protein, and flow cytometry? i also had egd and colonoscopy because of malignancy?

dad, 85, cbc today had esr of 40 (0-30) & eosinophils 10.9(0-7). esr was 35 and eosinophils 7.8 in sep. good diet, daily exercise, feels fine. p-smear always has shown mild anisocytosis for 10 yrs. more testing for cancer or infections right away?

: His ESR is normal when adjusted for age, eosinophilia is best assessed in absolute value. Given chronic anisocytosis best would be to get a hematologist involved early, hard otherwise to initiate infectious or malignancy work up with no focus suggested by symptoms or exam.
