what are the probability that liver shadows are tumours?

Accepted Answer

It depends: Most healthy people have spots on their liver.  These are usually benign (not cancerous) cysts called "hemangiomas", which are spaces filled with fluid.  The radiologist who interprets the images will know if the spots are worrisome, and will then order a different test or a biopsy.  If you have had cancer, spots in your liver could be signs of spread and need to be checked more thoroughly.

can a ct , without contrast tell the difference between liver cysts or liver tumours?

Yes...: A ct of the liver without contrast can easily differentiate between a cyst and solid tumor.  A cyst has the density of water which is different from solid tumors.  The contrast helps mostly with differentiating the solid tumors.  An us is perhaps the best test for detecting liver cysts and is free of radiation.  Hope this helps.

recently,my dad did a pet-ct scan. 4 tumours in liver, 2 are about 1.5cm and 2 less than 1.0 cm. these tumous are from his colon. what to expect?

Treatments available: Case should be discussed on a multi-specialty tumor board. Inoperable liver metastasis may be treated with chemotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, &amp; Radioembolization (performed by Interventional Radiology). Radioembolization combined with chemo has shown to slow progression for colon cancer when disease has progressed following prior treatment with chemotherapy &amp; metastases limited to the liver.

after 6 rounds of chemo (carboplatin/etoposide) my scan revealed stable lung and lymph tumours but slight growth in the liver.

is a tumor on the liver considered very serious?

Possibly: An array of liver tumors noted.  Benign cystic lesions as well as hemangiomas of no concern.  Metastatic lesions from breast, colon, lung, etc will grow and destroy liver if not managed by resection or chemoembolization .  Primary tumors such as hepatoma usually result of cirrhosis from Hep C and cholangioCa arising in bile duct can be very serious and must be treated early.

how can a tumor in the liver be identified and diagnosed?

Scans: Ultrasound, ct scan with contrast and mri, MRI being the most accurate for anything greater than 2cm. A blood test for AFP can detect hepatocellular carcinoma as well.

what to do if i have a benign liver tumor. is there anything i should avoid?

Accepted Answer

Should discuss: It is hard to say without more information - a simple cyst, small hemangioma, or fibronodular hyperplasia may require no changes, but a benign adenoma may require you to stop taking oral contraceptives if you are female.  Discuss with your surgeon as you may need to consider having further follow-up imaging for certain types of benign tumors.

Gynecomastia, or: Male breast enlargement may occur is cirrhosis of the liver due to lack of estrogen detoxification, but also occur in hormone producing tumors, lung cancer is one, but there are others making hcg. Liver tumors themselves do not do this.

is there pain after liver tumor biopsy?

SOMETIMES: Any biospy can have pain associated with it after the initial local anesthetic wears off. But not everyone experiences pain.  You should have something handy that you can take by mouth if pain presents itself after your biopsy. Ask your doctor for a prescription.
