Not common but: Not rare either.  In my own patient population (most of them have allergic or immune problem), chronic sinusitis accounts for about 1% of the visits.  The incidence is likely much lower in the general population. If you do have it and the CT did not show obstruction at the sinus openings (ostia), you should consider getting an allergy and possibly an immune evaluation.

CT, rhinoscopy: Chronic sinusitis can be caused by anatomically defects, which cause the sinuses to become infected. This can include, narrow drainage areas, septal deviation, or polyps. It can also be triggered by chronic allergies. A ct scan of the sinuses will help to rule out anatomical problems. Rhinoscopy can be used to evaluate the nasal passages. Allergy testing can be done to evaluate allergies.

What are symptoms: Sinusitis is an infection or an inflammation of the sinuses in the face and head.  The classical symptoms  of acute rhino-sinusitis are : 1.) nasal blockage and congestion 2.) yellow-green nasal discharge, 3.( fullness,  pain and pressure under and between the eyes, and 4.) more uncommon is pain over the eyes and on top of the head.  Chronic sinusitis needs  a CAT scan for a definitive diagnosis.

Long term symptoms: Chronic sinusitis is sinusitis lasting 3 months or longer. An exam by an ENT and a ct scan can confirm the diagnosis. The disease may be associated with nasal polyps and asthma.

Chronic sinusitis: It depends on the extent of the disease in the sinuses, sometimes surgery is necessary if they are blocked, or if polyps are clogging them, sometimes certain medications like antileukotrienes and nasal sprays can also help, and if allergies are at the root of the problem, treating them with medications and sometimes shots help. Consult an allergist for all your options.

It can: This is a chicken/egg question. Not everyone who has chronic sinusitis develops polyps. Most everyone who has polyps has chronic sinusitis. They are very closely associated with each other.

Not really: Chronic sinusitis is persistent sinus inflammation most commonly due to allergies, but there are many other causes as well. The best treatments include avoiding those things to which you're allergic, and reducing the sinus inflammation with nasal steroid sprays. The only otc med that might help is the decongestants, but there are lots of side effects with these in people over 40.
