What can be done for chronic sinusitis?

CT, rhinoscopy: Chronic sinusitis can be caused by anatomically defects, which cause the sinuses to become infected. This can include, narrow drainage areas, septal deviation, or polyps. It can also be triggered by chronic allergies. A ct scan of the sinuses will help to rule out anatomical problems. Rhinoscopy can be used to evaluate the nasal passages. Allergy testing can be done to evaluate allergies.

Surgery if meds fail: Chronic sinusitis can be quite debilitating and can be a significant source or discomfort for some patients year-round. I usually start with medical management with nasal steroids, antihistamines, antibiotics, sinus rinses, decongestants etc. If after 2 months of medical management, patients do not respond then a ct is indicated and if significant obstruction is noted, then surgery is warranted.

Alot: Chronic sinusitis is a very challenging disease to evaluate and treat. There are several potential causes including: allergies, structural abnormalities, cystic fibrosis, recurrent infections, primary immunodeficiency, hiv, vasculitis and idiopathic just to name few.
