If new symptoms: Blood is not one of the typical features if IBS. So if it is a new symptom, you should see a Gastroenterologist to see if there is something else superimposed on your ibs

Sigmoidoscopy: rectal pain can be the result of IBS but unusual.  Would suggest evaluation by your doctor with rectal exam and sigmoidoscopy

Be aware: 24y female has IBS-c, normal recent colonoscopy &amp; currently &quot;hard stools&quot; with single episode of &quot;bloody mucous&quot;; probably from mechanical injury to rectal mucosa. Report to doctor if blood is recurrent or generous. Pharmacologics are available from doctors for IBS-c, which is a functional problem. See comments:

i was told i have ibs which i have had frequent urge to use the bathroom usually little stool comes out but accompanied by mucus  i've been on bentyl which is helped out a lot until yesterday i have had bloody mucus in stool after straining ?

Inflammatory bowel?: This sounds like you have proctitis or proctocolitis i.e. inflammation of the rectum and/or colon, i.e. inflammatory bowel disease  (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis). Or maybe just irritable bowel plus a minor problem like hemorrhoid or anal fissure. If you have had receptive anal sex with other men, it could be an STD e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes. See a doctor soon to figure it out.

Need a Colonoscopy: A change in bowel habits as you are describing is an indication for a Colonoscopy. Before a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be conclusively made, other causes must be ruled out, most importantly, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. F/U with your Proctologist for a Colonoscopy.

Restriction diet: Irritable bowel syndrome can be a real difficulty. Not only can you have exposive diarrhea but also a constipation-predominant bowel irregularity along with crampy abdominal pains in response to certain foods. Try to identify these foods and avoid them. There are several anti-spasmodics on the market to help control symptoms. You may need a combination of medications to manage pain and bowels!

IBS and colitis: It is not uncommon to see a little mucous in the stool occasionally, however, you must be certain that nothing else is wrong. If you have irritable bowel it is important to have regular exams and to monitor the stool for blood or any other changes. Regular and appropriately timed colon exams are needed. If you have more than occasional small amounts-you need checked for a type of colitis as well

Yes indeed ..: It turns out that the passage of mucus while stooling is a common feature often seen with irritable bowel syndrome.  Even with healthy bowel movements we pass small amounts of mucus, but it's so small that it's not readily visible with the naked eye.  You should make sure that something more isn't going on, as visible mucus passage can be a feature seen in more concerning processes like IBD.
