Part of Ankle Joint: The talus bone or astragalus bone is the bone immediately below the leg bones. So it is the bottom part of the ankle joint. It can be injured during an ankle sprain where part of the tailar dome is injuried. The cartiledge can crack or have a defect sometimes this is missed on a plain x-ray film. This is one case where an MRI study is very important to help diagnose this type of cartiledge injury.

Comminuted fracture: Unfortunately, bone healing takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks. Staying compliant with non-weightbearing orders until then and eating a healthy diet, not smoking and (my preference) not taking NSAIDs (as there is evidence that they inhibit healing) are all important. If your injury looks anything like the attached photo, your healing time could be much longer (12+ weeks) minimum to a year.

Tight boot: Anytime you have a foot injury and use a boot, make sure the bindings are not too tight. The bindings can put excessive pressure on the fracture or injury. Remove the boot, elevate your foot and use ice. After ten minutes walk around in the boot with loosened straps. It may help.

A shoe by any name..: It really depends on what your basic needs are. Style, comfort and function are all options. Perhaps you can find a crossover shoe to meet two needs. At any rate, once you decide on which route you want to follow, the choice of shoe will be easier, albeit not easy.

fell. got an mri. broke talus, and navicular bones (foot) and have a join sprain (talonavicular). said i can ditch my orth. boot after 2 months (november 9th). im still having stiffness and and still hurt with rotating foot. is that normal??

: Stiffness is expected to some extent after a fracture and wearing a boot for 2 months. Physical therapy is usually needed in order to ensure proper recovery of range of motion and strength. That is usually considered at the time of follow up with Ortho team.

Yes...: Injuries to the talus may take a long time to heal and may need extended periods of immobilization.

Xray: If you are having pain, an xray may be the first step in evaluation.  Sometimes a ct scan or MRI may also be ordered.  If you believe your talus may be fractures, i recommend you be evaluated by a specialist asap.
