my two year old took a bit of a cheese stick through the wrapper. she swallowed the plastic wrapping. do i need to worry about it being poisinous?

Accepted Answer

No: If it's just a bit of wrapper, it should pass through with no problems.  A whole wrapper could present a problem.  Watch for belly pain or related.

: no. It should pass easily out the other end like the bugs he ate as a toddler.

It happens: If the kid can swallow fluids without choking the foreign material made it into the stomach. It will travel through the system over the next 3-5 days with no problems. I wouldn't bother looking for it although it may show up easily. If the kid is choking with all fluids have it seen.

Usually not: If it made it to the stomach, it should eventually pass in the poo in a few days.If the kid can drink fluids without choking, it made it to the stomach. A pedi surgeon liked to feed the kids stewed okra because if forms a soft bond with the foreign object and helps it move through the gut without scraping the walls.

Probably not: Most things that make it into the stomach will pass without any problems.  For bad belly pain, see a doctor.  Otherwise...This too shall pass!

Depends on symptoms: If just having a sensation of a little piece of plastic in the throat, one can call her primary care doctor to see if that doctor wants to take a look, or wants the patient go straight to an ENT doctor to look into the throat. If having trouble breathing, talking, or swallowing, then it is safer to call 911 and have the ambulance take a person to the ER, instead of driving in a private car.

If all goes: well it should come back out in your bowel.  If not, you can get an X-ray if the plastic is radio-opaque to see where it may get stuck.  Either way you should wait and monitor.

No: Whatever little pieces of stuff are accidentally swallowed (including little bones, seeds, plastic, glass, metal, etc...) will be pooped out. Dangerous objects are magnets, button batteries, and larger or sharper intentionally-eaten items.

Should be fine: This happens often. Don't be concerned. Bread bag ties have gotten trapped in the gut and been found years later. Smaller things pass easily.

Minimal: There is very little risk the plastic will get stuck in your digestive tract. It will very likely just pass through you as part of your bowel waste without you even being aware of it.
