Always possible: Check a pregnancy test to be sure. Sometimes women can have implantation bleeding. .  Either way you might check with your doctor.

When was last one: Use your past history of menstrual cycles to determine if this one came at the correct time or at an unexpected irregular time. If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available  at any pharmacy.

Could be: pregnant in spite of having one day of bleeding.  If pregnancy is not a possibility, then you would consider other causes such as viral illness for example.  Wait a week and do a pregnancy test if your symptoms continue.  See your doctor if not pregnant and you are not getting better

Your hormones: are likely in flux for whatever reason, and you would need to be patient to see if things would settle down.  Menstrual fluctuations are affected by many different factors, including nutrition, psychological state of mind, stress, infections/ illnesses, etc.  If things continue to be irregular or unpredictable in the next couple of months, get yourself to a GYN or family Doc.

NO WORRIES: Intermittent menstrual irregularities are not uncommon, nor are they concerning. It sounds like this is the first instance that has caught your attention, so I would not be overly concerned. You do need to monitor this "off cycle" bleeding and if it continues or becomes associated with other symptoms, prompt follow up would be in order.

Normal: With a cycle that is less than 31 days which most are and a 31 day month it is normal to bleed twice in the month. It is not likely that you got pregnant but it is also not impossible. If your period is late, you need to do a pregnancy test. The stress of worrying can make it late. You also need to see about beginning a reliable method of contraception.

Tests are accurate: Home pregnancy tests are very accurate and not affected by foods, herbs, common illnesses, sexually transmitted diseases, or medications. A correctly done urine test gives a reliable result 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have happened) or 1 week after missing a period. If done sooner, a positive result is likely real, but a negative result may be due to testing too soon.

how can you tell the difference between a regular period and spotting ? last month on the second day of my period i went through 3-4 pads in one day?

Can be the same. : For some spotting is just a part of the normal period that includes heavy days as well. Clotting, while common, is generally a reflection of excess bleeding not simple menstrual fluid.  Periods change for a given individual for many reasons--stress, environmental changes, and, even mild weight changes. Hope this helps.
