Get help now.: Start with a medical evaluation to rule out medical causes of your symptoms. Medications are sometimes indicated. Talking therapy to include Cognitive Behavioral therapy or psychotherapy can be effective. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hours of sleep per night &amp; good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies &amp; 4 of fruit per day. Oxymoron: This view appears to be a contradiction. An evaluation with a psychiatrist or psychologist would provide an opportunity to explore what is behind this desire. With so little information it is impossible to explain a cause for this. Why would a person want to trade the known (which he or she is perfectly happy with) for the unknown? Why would a person want to make this sacrifice? Talk to your doc!

Yes: It is critical that you start with your doc as many times medical conditions are also present. If established already with a psychologist or psychiatrist, that will be your best starting point. If you are 26, that is not later in life. It is understandable to feel lost, you need help.

Get psychiatric eval: Your depression sounds severe and requires a psychiatric evaluation. It's hard to say why your depression is so much worse at night but i can say that some people with severe depression  are more depressed when they are alone at night. The cutting and the wanting to die are warning signs that you need immediate treatment.

This can be something simple and easily managed or something more serious. Avoiding an evaluation just makes the stress factor worse. Do the evaluation and life can be better.
