i have strep throat and white patches on tonsils. i finished the antibiotics and i still have white patches on tonsils and no pain. what is this?

Tonsil white patches: It really is important you see your ear nose and throat doctor. The patches on the tonsils may either be a continuation of the strep bacterial infection, a yeast infection that commonly grows during antibiotic treatment or trapped food debris within the crypts of the tonsillar surface that appear like patches but are just undigested food particles.

7 yr old on day 9 of 10 augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) for strep throat ent said could still see little strep on tonsils does he need more days to take antibtics no fever ?

Not sure: I'm not sure what you mean about still "seeing" strept. If there is still inflammation, but your child is acting fine and afebrile, just complete the antibiotics and follow up with the doctor after treatment.

about to finish my 3 day zithromax 500 for strep throat. no more pain, but still having white patches on tonsils... is this normal ? will it take time to disappear or does it mean antibiotic didnt work? thanks a lot

7-10 days: It can take 7-10 days for symptoms to clear entirely, including white patches. Even with a positive strep test, many or most symptoms like this are due to an underlying viral infection -- and no virus responds to azithromycin (Zithromax) or any other antibiotic. Return to your doctor if you still have symptoms after 10 days.

i just finished taking amoxicillin for 7d for strep throat. there is no pain but there is still white on/around my tonsils, should i be concerned?

NO: Gargle with a warm water solution. You may be seeing some dead  tonsillar tissue from the infection.

Tonsils post-infx: It sounds like the infection cleared up ok (azithromycin is not my favorite drug for strep, it works ok), but you have more concern about chronic changes present in your tonsils and that is what is likely affecting your ear as well. If this is a one time thing, i'd give it another 4-8 weeks as long as you're feeling ok. If you have had chronic problems with recurrent tonsil/throat, time to see ent.

The only way ...: ....To tell for sure is a strep test.  Return to your doctor to find out for sure.

had strep throat beg of jan and was treated i waited couple weeks to be seen again i still had lil white patch on each tonsil can it be scarring?

Unlikley: You will get white patches on the tonsils from viral illness, but you can also get food particles in the crypts of your tonsils that appear white.  These will come and go.  Nothing to worry about.

is it possible to still have strep throat even after you are done taking antibiotic?

Yes, it is.: It is possible, but not likely. Amoxicillin generally works well for strep. However, once you are finished with the antibiotic, you are susceptible to getting it again...usually from another infected person. Occasionally, there is a resistant strain that requires a different antibiotic. If you are still not feeling well, you also may have a virus, such as mono. You should call your doctor.

i'm taking an antibiotic for strep throat, is it still ok to use monistat at the same time?

i've had strep throat my tonsils where hurting with yellow on them they no longer hurt but they still look massive?

Accepted Answer

: It can take weeks for tonsils to resume their pre-infection size after all the strep is dead. Many may also have a viral throat infection at the same time which will also delay recovery.
