i have eczema and i was wondering if taking zyrtec (cetirizine) and singular would help with eczema?

Please see below.: Singulair (montelukast) is only approved for allergies and asthma. Eczema is best managed by using a sensitive skin cleanser, avoiding bathing in very hot water, and using a sensitive skin lotion at least 3 times daily, even when the rash isn't there. Oral antihistamines and Hydrocortisone ointment can help as well. If doing this doesn't control it, please see your doctor.

how long does it take to develop tolerance to zyrtec? how often would i have to take it to become tolerant? i take cetirizine hcl (10 mg) for my eczema flare ups, and i was worried the pills would lose its effectiveness if i took them too often?

: This is not one of the drug types that are rendered less effective with use. Eczema has a common pattern of mixed flare ups &amp; improvements over time that may lead someone to think meds are less helpful. I would use it as you need it  and have a plan that includes alternative treatments when the expected flare ups occur.

Test & see: Some people do get palpitations from chronic antihistamine use. Try stopping the zyrtec (cetirizine) for 3 days, with everything else as close to identical as you can make it and see if palpitations disappear. If so, they are related. Perhaps you could achieve eczema benefit with 1/2 tablet or with every-other-day dosing of zyrtec (cetirizine)?

No: Children can grow out of allergy after a few years. Zyrtec (cetirizine) does not make allergies go away under any circumstance. It does block the hormone histamine that is released during an allergic reaction that can cause trouble. It's good the allergies are gone, but make sure you confirm this with your allergist before giving her the items. Peanut allergy especially rarely goes away quickly.

Yes and no: Oral antihistamines can lessen the severity of the itching that goes along with eczema.  Moisturizers are the primary treatment, as well as avoidance of things that aggravate the skin.  Topical steroids help with the more severe flares, while oral steroids are sometimes used.  Talk to your doctor.  All of these help lessen the severity of the itching, but don't make eczema go away for good.

Discuss: If there are other options which do not involve suppresses the immune system, such as a combination of topical medications and a dilute bleach bath, this would be a better option. Immunocompromised patients may be more likely to have a complication of the disease. Avoid contact, stay home, monitor your temperature and stay well.

It depends.: It depends on what you mean by 'sick' -- eczema can be very itchy, which is uncomfortable, and it can get infected. Eczema by itself doesn't cause nausea, fever, or other whole-body symptoms, other than the rash and itch.

Moisturizers: The most important treatment for eczema is the use of moisturizers. Avoid drying soaps, such as antibacterial or deodorant soaps. After bath or shower, pat the skin dry and apply a good moisturizing cream (creams are better than lotions which are mostly water). For very irritated areas, use a Hydrocortisone cream before applying the moisturizer. Reapply moisturizer frequently as needed.
