Could be a vein: This can possibly be a perforator vein causing you pain/burning/ache. Do you have any varicose veins or spider veins in the area? If yes then it's likely that the diagnosis. Get evaluated by a surgeon who treats varicose veins.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. In the mean time you may take an over the counter pain medication like acetaminophen.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

my 7 year old son broke his lower leg (tibia / fibia fracture) skiing 4 mo's ago and has recovered.  but he has yet to gain his full mobility.  should he do physical therapy?  he's a pretty active boy

Disuse atrophy: While he was in a cast his muscles weakened because of disuse. Physical therapy is an excellent idea for him to restore his muscles.

what is stress fracture of lower leg and how do you treat it?

Tiny bone breaks: Stess fractures come from repetative overuse of leg and foot muscles, which leads to small cracks in leg/foot bones. Beginning runners are prone to this. Older people with osteoporosis can get stress fractures too. Treatment can be a walking boot, or crutches, or a brace. Pain meds are more like tylenol (acetaminophen) than nsaids like advil or Aleve as they may (or may not) slow down bone repair.

: Please see an Orthopedic Surgeon for an x-ray of your leg. If you can't get an appointment you can go to an urgent care center for an x-ray and then follow up with the Orthopedic Surgeon if you need to get treatment.

Yes and No.: Swelling after a fracture, especially in the lower extremity, can be expected but with some limitations. Your question needs further specifics to have a meaningful response. How long ago? The fracture site and severity? The location of the swelling as well as any other health issues affecting your health would be helpful.

: The description implies a worrisome decrease in blood flow/circulation in the site. I would see your doctor as soon as it can be arranged. If not available go to urgent care or an emergency room.

6 plus weeks: Broken bones take about six weeks to heal if you're otherwise healthy. Recovery includes healing of  the fracture but also physical therapy. Done adjacent  muscles, tendons etc. Also have to heal.

when can you play sports after open fracture in lower leg?

First everything has: To heal. You have to be patient. I don't know the extent of the fracture or how it was repaired. Generally, it takes 6-8 weeks for bone to heal. But, physical therapy may be needed. The answer is really when your surgeon gives you permission, but realistically it will take at minimum a couple of months. Do not try and walk on it before the doc gives you permission. You do not want to delay healing.

in '99, spiral fractured one lower leg bone and shattered the other.  dr says it's healing nicely still.  still, on occassion have extreme pain in leg.  have lots of pins and metal in leg.  this why?

Severe Injuries: Regardless of the ijury, it never heals perfect.  As an expected long term complication of your injury, chronic pain may be expected.  The expectation of healing perfectly and not having any pain is not realistic.  Occasional pain and some dysfunction is a realistic expectation.
