i fell and hit my leg on the stairs lastweek and there a bruise and a huge lump that won't go away, should i be concerned?

Hematoma?: This could be a hematoma, which is essentially a black-and-blue mark that's a bit deeper under the skin.  Whereas black-and-blue marks spread in two dimensions, a hematoma grows in three dimensions so can feel like a lump under the skin.  If your leg is not diffusely swollen then a DVT is probably not a concern. Warm soaks to this area may help.

what if you hit your shin and it hurt but it didn't bruise. a week later though there was a hard lump on my shin. could i have chipped my shin?

Accepted Answer

Hematoma: If there was no bruise, the trauma was probably more blunt which can still cause some blood oozing into the skin, forming a hematoma in a few days. If  it ellicits sharp pain on pressing on it, you may need to get an X Ray to rule out a chip fracture. In the meantime, Ice, immobilize with an Ace bandage, and take ibuprofen to help it heal soon. Feel better:)

Insect bite: Could be many things: insect bite, splint, bruise , ruptured small vessel. No reason to panic, in most cases something of short term significance. Get well soon.

i have had a lump under a bruise on the side of my shin for about a week now. dont remember bumping it. how do i go about finding out what this is? :/

1st, tell a parent: If you have a bruise you likely did bump it and the bump could be a collection of blood under/within the bruise. It should naturally go away with time and nearly be gone after a week. Larger bruises take longer. If it keeps happening or doesn't resolve you should see a doctor.

Hematoma: You most likely have a collection of blood under the skin from the trauma. This is not dangerous. It should go away over the next 2-4 weeks. You could use a heating pad at its mid setting for 20 minutes at a time to help promote resolution of the hematoma. No matter what it will eventually resolve.

Hematoma: Your tibia( shin) bone is not covered w/ muscles in the front of the bone esp.Farther down your leg. Contusions to it are common and small collections of blood beneath the skin( hematomas )are also common. Nothing to worry about ; it should go away slowly w/ time.

Bruise with hematoma: The shin area is a very common location for a toddler to have a bruise from a fall.  Sometimes, a small vein near the area of injury is injured as well causing a small hematoma or "lump."  It should gradually get smaller over the course of a few weeks to months, but should no longer be painful after about 1 week.  It should not affect his walking.  If other symptoms develop, he should see his doc.

7 y.o. has faint bruise on shin with firm lump beneath (hurts when pressed). if he hit it that hard, should bruise be more obvious? cause for concern?

Bone Bruise: There is really not much protection of the shin from a direct blow.  Since there is not much muscle coverage you won't see brusing as you would in the calf area. Watch the area for a few days and if it does not go down then have him see your pediatrician.  Most bruises resolve.

Hematoma: It is common to form hematomas over the shin/tibia after direct trauma. This collection of blood will gradually resorb, but it's common for a lump to exist for many months.
