Usually: Usually it's one gland that has the adenoma but you can also have a condition called parathyroid hyperplasia where all 4 glands are enlarged.  You only need 1/2 of a parathyroid gland to function normally, that is, 1/2 out of 4 glands.

Both: Some of parathyroid tumors have no genetic bearing then you can call it bad luck, others hane genetic link as in men syndromes.

Parathyroid : Parathyroid is one of the essential endocrine glands that produce a hormone called parathormone regulates calcium metabolism. Parathyroid glands are four in number, by the side of thyroid gland in the neck. They are no where near lung or heart.

Hydration: These changes may be due to variations in your state of hydration. If you do not have any symptoms, you may watch and wait. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.

Severe deficiency: In parathyroid hormone is usually evident within hours, however post operative swelling can cause a temporary decline in parathyroid hormone secretion which can return toward normal over several days. If it's been a month, check w/your doctor for their recommendations.

i had a total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago and after the surgery, my calcium dropped to 7.4. i was in the hospital for 3 extra days. my calcium is now 7.1 and parathyroids have gone. your thoughts?

Hypocalcemia: Hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy is common.  You might be on oral calcium supplements for a time, but the vast majority of parathyroids will start to work eventually.  Long term hypocalcemia is rare after thyroidectomy.  It usually just takes time.

Parathyroid: Parathyroid cancer is very rare. Elevated parathyroid hormone causes high calcium and is usually due to a parathyroid adenoma, which is benign.  Should be evaluated by a surgeon who does parathyroid surgery.

i have two cysts on my thyroid, diagnosed with osteopenia and have had three unexplained rib fractures. hyperparathyroidism? do i need to get checked?

Yes: Get in to see your doc. Ask about PTH/parathyroid hormone level. It is a simple blood draw, can be added on to other labs. Will answer the question. Take a friend or family with you to appointment to help with questions and answers.  Be well. Parathyroid glands are near your thyroid, usually need nuclear scans to detect on imaging. Only if, PTH level is up.
