Severe deficiency: In parathyroid hormone is usually evident within hours, however post operative swelling can cause a temporary decline in parathyroid hormone secretion which can return toward normal over several days. If it's been a month, check w/your doctor for their recommendations.

Blood calcium levels: The most accurate determination of normally functioning parathyroid glands is normal blood calcium levels. These levels can only be accurate without taking supplements. Parathormone levels are another way of measuring parathyroid function. In patients with removal of glands because of hyperparathyroidism elevations can persist awhile postoperatively.
