dr. theodore, should i be worried about any side effects from giving my baby the sterile water for irrigation? i tried looking up if sterile water for irrigation was safe to drink and couldn't find a simple answer?

It depends...: Saline irrigation can be helpful for soothing nasal passages and removing excess mucus. Lukewarm, purified water with proper ph balance using non-iodized salt with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) are important aspects of a good nasal saline rinse.

1/4 tsp per cup: Usually 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon for 8 ounces will do. Nasal lavage can be helpful for chronic sinus congestion, and i often recommend it. However, some studies suggest a risk of infection if neti pot or bottle not kept clean or use of contaminated tap water, or even injury to nasal tissue. So be cautious.

Salt water is better: You can make your own using one teaspoon of salt to a quart of water (or 1/4 tsp to 1 cup).  Boil it first and of course cool before using.  Any clean squeeze bottle will do.

i made a bottle of formula for my 37 day old baby with sterile water for irrigation. it was sealed and i had just opened it. do i need to be worried???

: Worried about what? The water? It was sterilized and the seal was unbroken. It's just water. If you're worried about something else, please repost with what you are worried about.

Cleaning :  Soap uses ionic bonds to remove bacteria, viruses, mold etc when combined with water.  This will not necessarily occur with rinsing alone.  Can rub surface of bottle in combination with water to remove soap residue.

my husband uses neilmed irrigation and just rinses bottle with hot water when finished. doesnt use soap for fear of residue. is it dangerous to not use soap after using the saline solution? you mix the packet with distilled water?

Doctor can help: After trying to get rid of ear wax with water or another liquid, there may be a glob of wet mushy wax that is still inside. A primary care doctor can look inside the ear canal and usually get the remaining wax out. If the doctor sees anything unusual in the ear, or if the ear looks fine but odd sensations persist, the patient can be checked by an ENT doctor (ear nose throat doctor).
