how long can face swelling last while on an antibiotic after a root canal?

It all depends: Swelling after a root canal should be a very rare occurence, and should be monitored very cosely.  Antibiotics can be helpful in reducing the swelling, but 3-7 days can be required.  You should at least consider that the root canal is ineffective, or did not address the source of the swelling.  Request that you be monitored by your dentist that did the root canal or see an endodontist.

Yes: Anibiotics probably should be given or such a swelling.  The bigger question should be why are you swollen.  This could be a sign of an underlying problem, as this is not a normal or favorable occurence.  The antibiotics will not "fix" a deficiency in the root canal, but may be effective in getting the swelling temorarily under control.  You should watch this closely. Perhaps get another opinion.

Lymph Node: This could be a lymph node that became enlarged in response to the problem with your tooth. Would just let the dentist know.

i had a root canal just over a week ago and as soon as it was done and i was put on the antibiotics because there was infected tissue. having a lot of drainage since. some colored but mostly clear. is this normal? no fever swelling, or pain?

: You needed root canal therapy since there was an infection in the bone surrounding your tooth. The therapy removed the dead tissue  in the tooth which caused the infection, but the residual infection is now being treated with the antibiotics. Since it is draining there is little if any pressure in the bone resulting in no pain or swelling.

See a Dentist Again: The aim of root canal therapy is to eliminate an infection within (sometimes around) a tooth. This usually works quite quickly and well. However, if the infection doesn't clear-up, especially with the support of antibiotics, you must go back to the dentist. Perhaps an additional antibiotic is needed. Maybe more treatment has to be done. Facial infections are serious and dangerous. Go back again.

It is unusual. See: Your dentist. Typically, any pain and swelling that was caused by a root canal infection clears within days, not weeks. There is still something going in. See your dentist to have the area evaluated again.

Endodontist: The endodontist who performed your root canal is best qualified to answer your question, but I don't feel that these reactions are out of the ordinary and the swelling may last a few days. However I recommend that you notify the doctor of your current status and whether he/she recommends cold applications to control facial swelling.

Depends: Depends on the severity of your infection and the rate at which you heal. May take days to months to be completely resolved. The Dentist or specialist Endodontist that treated you would be able to give you a much more personalized answer as he/she knows your case best.
