Alcohol side effects: Alcohol is a drug with many side effects.  At low doses it causes sedation, dizziness, and can have withdrawal at night leading to waking up in the middle of the night with bad dreams. This is a relase of the dream suppression that occurs while under the influence.  Higher doses can cause blackouts, tremors, liver disease and eventual death.  Use with caution.

vivid gruesome nightmares. no med changes late snacks or alcohol. always a vivid dreamer but why the horrific nightmares over the last 6 months it so.

No Single Cause: If you were always a vivid dreamer and now you are having nightmares the cause is usually something that can be teased out in therapy. A good way to think about dreams is a day residue, something that we are to uncomfortable to discuss or focus on during the day or don't complete thinking about during the day continues during the night. The themes sometimes make sense but not the content.

Drinking it!: Drinking alcohol can trigger nightmares. Alcohol is associated with more intense dreaming as well as better recall of dreams. Also when coming off alcohol individuals can have disrupted sleep and dream more as well.

Alcohol withdrawal: This depends on many factors.  The general health of the individual, the degree of addiction, the amount of alcohol consumed, the health of the organs e.g. The liver and the central nervous system etc., and the other co-existing diseases.

Yes: Improves in about a week.  Can take longer. Avoid caffeine and sleeping pills. Also, dreaming about drinking is quite common. Sharing your dreams with other members at aa meetings and your group will help relieve anxiety about it.

One day at a time: Ar night, try to rest. Don't worry if you don't sleep. Just rest. Each day will become easier. One day/night at a time. You will get better, little by little and day by day. Count your blessings.

Could well be: Your body  may be telling you something.  Your liver is not able to process alcohol as well as before and if you know you have fatty liver, you know why.  You're very unwise to continue drinking at all in this situation, and certainly should try to stop altogether.

Alcohol & cirrhosis: Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver. It can occur without any alcohol consumption at all. Alcohol can exacerbate another condtion making it progress to cirrhosis more quickly. Most 'true' alcoholics' do not develop cirrhosis without some other condition present. Cirrhosis purely due to alcohol is relatively uncommon. Hepatitis from alcohol can mimic cirrhosis yet fully recover with abstinence.

Many possibilities: Talk with your psychiatrist or therapist about this.  Some medications can cause nightmares, as well as certain other substances like alcohol.  Additionally, inner conflict, stressful situations, or emotional trauma can lead to nightmares.
