No Single Cause: If you were always a vivid dreamer and now you are having nightmares the cause is usually something that can be teased out in therapy. A good way to think about dreams is a day residue, something that we are to uncomfortable to discuss or focus on during the day or don't complete thinking about during the day continues during the night. The themes sometimes make sense but not the content.
