Possible contraction: not clear why would you have periodic pains, but recommend evaluation by gynecologist and imaging, if exam is not revealing

Normal levels: Just because you have no uterus only one ovary does not mean that you do not continue to cycle and to ovulate. These levels are normal a little before ovulation. The usefulness of checking these levels in the first place is questionable.

No explanation: One reason that CA125 is such a poor cancer screen is that a great many healthy people run relatively high levels for no apparent reason. .IThe key is managing her underlying illness if at all possible. I trust that cause has been found and is not tumor.

Age usually: Other than patient preference for leaving them in, age is the usual reason. Taking healthy ovaries out of a young woman gives her instant and usually very symptomatic menopause.

Bottom line - need to have a long talk with your obgyn before making this decision.

in a total hysterectomy is it better to remove everything (including the ovaries) or to leave them?

Up to you: If they take out the ovaries, you will go through menopause right away unless they give you hormones.  If you are getting a hysterectomy due to cancer, get everything taken out. If the hysterectomy is for something other than cancer, you can leave the ovaries there and you will still have menopause but not until your usual age (usually 45 - 55).

am now 38. what should i expect after the abdominal hysterectomy if they leave my ovaries?

No periods: The main advantage to leaving the ovaries is to preserve the hormonal environment. Besides not having menstrual bleeding, things should pretty much stay the same. There may be some differences related to sexual function, some women experience orgasms differently after a hysterectomy.

It's normal: A degenerating corpus luteum is always okay if you are still cycling; it simply means you ovulated some time before. You will continue to have CL with each cycle until menopause.

is a hysterectomy the best option to permanently repair a partial uterine prolapse? is it better to leave cervix and ovaries? i'm 54 last period 2 yrs

Prolapse repairs: Hysterectomy is not the only "permanent" repair of a uterine prolapse. Depending upon the severity of the prolapse, first and second degree prolapses can be surgically repaired with round or uterosacral ligament fixations. If you are a smoker,  have a chronic respiratory ailment or do exercises that increases intra-abdominal pressure(Valsalva) then hysterectomy is the option.

had a hysterectomy two years ago and they left one ovary which seems to keep developing painful cysts. tried removing ovary but its attached to my bow?

Accepted Answer

Adhesions: It sounds like you may have developed adhesions. Adhesions are similar to scar tissue within the body, which can make future surgery around the area very difficult. You might consider seeing your doctor to determine if there is any other medical way to treat your ovarian cysts.
