Cretinism: Until about 14 weeks gestation the fetus depends on the mother's thyroid hormone before it can make its own. Severe low levels of maternal thyroid hormone can cause cretinism which is a syndrome of severe physical stunting and mental developmental delay. If already diagnosed with hypothyroidism be diligent about taking daily thyroid hormone medication and get levels checked every 3 months at least.

No one does that: Hi. I treat a lot of hypothyroidism in pregnancy. NO ONE would leave hypothyroidism untreated in pregnancy. When women are diagnosed with hypothyroidism during pregnancy, we TREAT THEM! Don't run an experiment! Get treated!

Depends: As a male, the effects of hypothyroidism are less pronounced though profoundly low levels can affect sperm production.  In females, it is very important to maintain normal thyroid levels (TSH around 2) for the health of the baby during pregnancy.

A lot: If you are not pregnant, it will be much harder to get pregnant with hypothyroidism. If you are pregnant, see your doctor  right away for treatment because hypothyroidism will affect the development of brain of the fetus during the first trimester.

Yes you can: The thyroid function needs  to be followed  during pregnancy, but you can have  a normal pregnancy. It may not effect  the baby in any way but  your gynecologist  can follow and if  any issues arise  you can see  high risk OB if necessary.

Take your meds: Continue to take your meds as prescribed by your providers. Pregnancy can affect what doses are required to maintain normal levels and your dose may need adjustment. Don't stop your thyroid meds without consulting your doc....Doing so can be harmful.

Fatigue: And cold intolerance are the most frequent symptoms.   Tsh level will give an answer in minutes.

what's the best medicine to treat hypothyroidism during pregnancy? i'm on synthroid (thyroxine) should i take cytomel too?

No need.: Cytomel is useful when either a rapid rise, or a rapid fall, in thyroid hormone levels is needed. If there is need to adjust dosage in pregnancy, slower acting synthroid (thyroxine) works just fine.

diagnosed with hypothyroidism during pregnancy.took levothyroxine. after delivery blood result showed hyper so i had to stop and repeat blood test after 3 weeks. now tsh is 7. does it take time for the body to normalize levels?

Hypothyroidism: Your thyroid is underactive again. When you were overactive, I think all that was needed was to reduce your dose of levothyroxine and retest after a week or so. It's time to get back on treatment. A thyroidologist or endocrinologist can advise you best,however.
