i have a 1.6 cm x 1.1 cm x 1.7 cm midpole predominantly hyperechoic thyroid nodule.  suggests a fine needle aspiration.  findings suggest a diffuse thyroiditis.  do i need a fine needle aspiration?  and what is a diffuse thyroiditis?

: Diffuse thyroiditis is also called Hashimoto thyroiditis which is common in older women. Thyroid nodule is one manifestation of this disease.
What is your TSH level, normal, low or elevated? TSH level also affects the decision of fine needle aspiration (FNA).
Just base on the characteristics of the nodule without TSH level, you can choose to be monitored. If TSH level is low, you do not need FNA

Only biopsy: Only a biopsy can say for sure whether or not it is cancer.

Could be: A stone or fat containing benign lesion called an angiomyolipoma. Both look bright or "hyperechoic". Depending on your symptoms, you might consider seeing a urologist.

i have hyperechoic liver with nodule. i drank for 15 years. could it just be fat?

Accepted Answer

: With liver nodules, the first step is to differentiate between cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic changes. There are many types of benign tumors that will have to be considered, focal fatty changes,hepatocellular carcinoma or liver cancer. However, if cancerous, there is a higher chance to be metastatic originating in another organ. Biopsy can clarify, many times not needed due to new imaging modalities.

Hyperechoic: Lesions are "bright" or whiter than surrounding liver. Hypoechoic lesions are darker than surrounding liver. There are long lists of what causes these and ct scans or MRI are often used to sort out questions.

Kidney stone: Hyperechoic mass does not really give enough information but this would most likely be consistent with a kidney stone. Calcification should also be considered and if the mass appears to be soft tissue then i would recommend ct follow-up to rule out malignancy.

Usually not: Angiomyolipomas of the kidney suspected on ultrasound can  be quickly assessed with non contrast dedicated renal ct. If gross fat is seen on ct then it is a benign angiomyolipoma and you are done with the evaluation.

The vast majority: of the time, this finding represents a benign angiomyolipoma and requires no treatment.  The ultrasound appearance is not diagnostic, but CT or MRI can usually make a definitive confirmation of the diagnosis due to certain unique features of the nodule on those modalities.

there is a hyperechoic structure with internal vascularity within the endometrium measuring up to 4.8 cm in diameter. what may this mean?

Uterine lesion: I believe further studies such as a hysteroscopic procedure with biopsy will be needed to determine the exact nature of the uterine lesion which appears to be a growth measuring almost 2 inches in diameter. Your gynecologist is best qualified to evaluate,advise and treat you.
