May be insect bite: like bugs or may be an allergic reaction to other substances. 1% hydrocortisone is good choice

Hives treatment: It takes about 1 to 3 hours for Claritin (loratadine) to start working. If you still symptomatic and suffer this much, it is safe to take an extra one. Call your doctor if it does not go away later today.

im 26 weeks pregnant, i broke out in hives last week, will a lot of benedryl/ zyrtec and cortizone (hydrocortisone) creams affect my unborn baby? my hives burn...

Probably not: Zyrtec is a class b (very safe), Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is category c (safe). Odds are that  your baby will be fine. However, simple hives usually itch, not burn. If you need to use a lot of medication without getting adequate relief, go see  your obstetrician and/or a dermatologist.

6-y-o w/ hives on arms & legs. ped. advised hydrocortisone and benadryl (diphenhydramine) every 4 hrs. after 8 hrs, still red, puffy, itchy. should we try loratadine?

Loratadine: Loratadine (claratin is same only costs more) is far superior to benadryl (diphenhydramine). It is a mystery to me that any dr would use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for anything except as a sleeping pill. In children it may have the opposite effect, making them agitated. You may need to take the child to a dermatologist. Is it really hives or is it excoriated eczema?

Determine cause: An immunologic workup is indicated. Please note any possible triggers such as certain foods, exposures and medications. Once you have lab work more information regarding your condition may be possible,

Unlikely: There are individuals who are allergic to steroid creams or ointments.  In these cases, the rash being treated doesn't get better or it worsens.   Topical steroids are usually ineffective in the treatment of hives.  Oral steroids will work, but there are more risks and side effects.   Antihistamines are the usual treatment for hives.

: Maybe in some foreign countries. In the US this is a prescription strength, made so when inappropriate use can harm patients. Contact your doc &amp; maybe they will consider a phone consult adequate to prescribe the med.

No but: Prolonged use of a very potent cortisone cream (hydrocortisone is considered a weak one) may cause skin bruising and thinning.  The peeling  you usually see from it indicates that the lesions you are treating are healing partly as the result of the cream and not the cause.
