Quite unusual: Have you been on steroids?  Have you been on antibiotics?  Even then, thrush would be unusual in a teenager with an normal immune system.  Get checked and tested for HIV disease in addition to assessment of general immune function.

Can happen: It depends on underlying medical conditions and medications. For  example, some inhaled steroids for asthma or COPD can lead to oral thrush.  Some diseases of the immune system can also lead to thrush, especially when being treated.

Oral Thrush: Caused by yeast called candida or monilia, common in neonates from contact in birth canal. Lesions are white plaques covering oral, pharyngeal mucosa, tongue, inner lips and cheeks. When removed rubbing, raw beefy mucosa with pinpoint bleeding seen. Discomfort may cause feeding problem in infants. Other causes: myelo-suppressive therapy, immunodeficiency, endocrine diseases, antibiotic use, etc.
