my son had to get 4 stitches on his forehead. so, what are some best practices with respect to caring for his wound to minimize scarring?

: Wounds that aren't too deep will heal better. Apply an moisturizing ointment like aquaphor twice a day. Many surgeons don't recommend applying antibiotic ointment prophylactically. After sutures are removed gently massage the wound with aquaphor daily.  The wound will continue through different phases for months and if the laceration wasn't very deep or didn't scab badly results should be good

good day doc, i did my circumcision about 2 months ago and m starting to see scars more specifically where the stitches were inserted. so i was wondering if it is normal and is there a treatment that i can use to minimize the scaring?

Healing takes 6m: Once the Stitches are removed, the newly closed cut will take up to 6 months to completely heal. While this occurs, new tissue may form that causes the stitch site to look more red and pronounced. Using vitamin E oil can help with the healing process, as can any healing ointment that keeps the tissue well nourished. Man 1 man oil can be used for this purpose.

Glue or steristrips: The key to making the most invisible scars is lack of tension on the incision.  This is accomplished by placing multiple deep sutures.  The closure of the skin is best done with glue or steristrips.  This will eliminate any scarring from sutures or staples.

Scars are permanent: Scars from stitches are permanent. Most scars get get thick and dark for three to six months, then get smaller and less noticeable, but never go away.

Yes, usually.: It depends on what part of the body the stitches were placed, and why they were placed.  For example, facial scarring from surgical stitches can be fixed very well by good plastic surgery.  Stitches placed for an irregular injury are harder to fix.  The chest  doesn't heal very well, often leaving a scar that is stretched.  Have a plastic surgeon look at the scar.

If your stitches: were black there is a small possibility that there is thread still under the skin if the stitches were not removed properly.  Or you may just have a small keloid growing.  Keloid is an dark overgrowth of skin tissue usually over a scar that can develop into a large anomaly over normal skin.   There are random people that get these especially darker skin folks.  It is harmless.

Scar: I don't know about the product you mention.  Vitamin E oil (sold in a little bottle at the drug store) can be applied to the scar and it may lighten or remove the scar, even an old one.  No guarantees.  Peace and good health.

Generally: yes it does get better in few days - weeks.

i had surgery 3 weeks ago and the stitches have mostly fell out but there is quite a large scar is this permanent?

Accepted Answer

: It all depends on where the scar is and how long. Usually scars become smaller and smoother over time. If really concerned best is to go back to the surgeon.
