Foot drop : Lumbar plexus lesions tend to cause weakness of hip flexion and adduction and/or knee extension. Lumbosacral trunk and upper sacral plexus lesions result in foot drop or flail foot, depending on the extent of involvement, and weakness of knee flexion or hip abduction.

No, ice will not.: No, ice will not, probably help.  Foot drop is caused by a serious injury to the common peroneal nerve, and/or entrapment of the nerve causing paralysis of  the peroneal muscles. Seek medical help asap, you do not want this to become a permanent paralysis !

Foot drop: Foot drop is usually caused by pressure on Lumbar Nerve 5, but 5 percent of people have a shift up or down in which level of the spine affects which nerve. Pressure on the peroneal nerve usually near the knee can cause this as well. If not properly diagnosed or treated the weakness can be permanent and require bracing. If it is from the spine therapy and injections can often work without surgery

Peroneal nerve: You most likely have peroneal nerve palsy.
See your PCP or a neurologist.You may need physical therapy.Foot drop shoud improve over time.

need a 2nd mri after foot drop.1st mri shows protuding disc l5s1.will this show cause of drop or just rule out other causes?had 1 failed nerve drop

EMG would be better: I am not sure why you would need another mri.  An emg/ncv (electromyography and nerve conduction) might be a better test to localize the location of the problem.  It can detect where the nerve is abnormal-often it it at the level of the knee.

i damaged my acl & perneal nerve  causing foot drop. is burning & pain normal? what can they do to treat the foot drop and will i get sensation back?

MBB brace is best: If the nerve is damaged then foot drop may be permanent. The brace I described is the latest. Very comfortable and unintrusive. Therapy can help wth strength and reeducation of the muscles.

Unlikely: Lumbar radiculopathy and peroneal neuropathy are much more likely, and sometimes the MRI findings are there but poorly understood.  Further evaluation, emg/ncv of the lower extremities, and additional MRI eval for lateral recess l5s1.

Clarification: The peroneal nerve is comprised mainly of l-5 level functions, and your described disc would be at the wrong site, unless of course, a small fragment has lodged near the l-5 lateral recess.  Suppose you could have abnormal proximal sciatic nerve function.  Was this directly tested?  You might have issue with compression at lateral knee.  But could be a focal lesion within central nervous system.

AFO: An ankle-foot-orthosis (afo) is a brace that can allow you to bear weight and ambulate off the drop foot.  These are provided by certified orthotists, on prescription of your orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist. It helps correct, but does not cure the problem.

could post herpetic nerve damage in my leg cause foot drop?  is there a test to determine this type of damage?

Yes it can: Emg/ncv can be done to tell you if there is nerve damage but it won't tell you why.
