When your immune : System goes down or when you're sick, cold sores (due to a viral infection /herpes simplex 1) would flare up . Ask your dr for a prescription of acyclovir/zovirax or Famvir or Valtrex (valacyclovir) when it flares up for faster healing.

Sorry, not possible: Once an oral herpes lesion has a scab, nothing can be done to speed healing further. The scab will fall off in its own time; removing it sooner will result in a new scab and take even longer.  Covering it with makeup is just about all you can do. For the future, talk with your doctor about having a prescription for valacyclovir (Valtrex) on hand. Immediate Rx (2 grams, 1 dose) is very effective.

Comfortable: Don't play with it. Do anything that makes you comfortable.  It takes about 2 weeks to go away no matter what you seem to do.  However check with your pharmacy for a few items that may make you more comfortable - remember that they generally do not shorten the 2 week time.

i have a cold sore scab above my top lip and it looks horrible! it is so big! is there anyway to get rid of it or speed the healing process?? is it true if the cold sore is on skin that it would take 7 days! more longer than a one on your lip? please help

Keep it moist: Once you have reached the scab stage, it just has to resolve on it's own. If you keep it moisturized with ointment, it will soften the scab and heal more quickly.
If you have recurrent cold sores, consider having an antiviral onhand (pills and ointment). If you take or apply antivirals as soon as you begin to get symptoms (itching or burning), you can often abort the full blown cold sore.

SSKI: try topical SSKI/DMSO.
It is totally over the counter, although those with sensitive skin may have trouble with the DMSO.
