Depends: Generally a pain specialist will rx methadone, but there are some strict criteria since it has been involved in overdoses and can affect the way the heart beats.  Generally its required to have an ekg before initiating, repeat ekg one month after starting and every six month thereafter to monitor the heart to make sure its beating appropriately.  I would recommend a pain specialist for evaluation.

Methadone: Yes this is commonly used to treat addicts. Once stabilized on Methadone - you can be weaned off slowly without consequences as long as other aspects of the addiction are addressed as well.

You can, but: someone needs to be around you to monitor the vital signs, including temperature, pulse, breathing rate, and blood pressure. You may experience breathing problems, sleepiness and/or loss of alertness. You need to wait 12 hours to be safe. Rec.: follow exactly instructions given to you by your prescribing physician.

Methadone: Never try to do anything unless the doc who prescribes the Methadone is in the picture. I suggest you have a good talk with the doc and tell him you want to get off the methadone. He will develop a plan for this to happen.

Depends.: A commitment process are used for patients who are a danger to himself or others and do not understand his need for treatment. A judge will rule on the commitment  after a request is made by any adult who knows the patient and supported by two doctors' recommendations.
