Time or myringotomy: This will usually resolve on its own. If you want to hasten it, you may get an ENT to lance your ear drum (a myringotomy).

Blocked?: If it is truly occluded with wax you could get some of these symptoms - use an over the counter ear wax softener at night and then flushing with warm water in the morning may help clear this.  If it persists you should see your doctor.

Serous otitis: Fluid behind the ear drum can occur after a cold or with allergies.  It may resolve on it's own as the cold resolves or it can become infected with bacteria.  If there is pain that is worsening with or without fever, this may indicate a bacterial infection. If not better, best to see ENT doctor for a check.

Alcohol: Try a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol. This will change surface tension of water and allow the fluid to evaporate.

Serous otitis: Anti-inflammatories and decongestants can get rid of this.  Nasal sprays and sometimes antibiotics are helpful as well.  See your PCP if these dont help.

ENT: Your symptoms suggest something is irritating the area. Have your doctor refer you to ENT for an exam. All the best.

Unlikely  the cause: Fluid can come and go behind the ear drum over a period of weeks with no symptoms.The fluid originates from the walls of the middle ear and simply does not exit through the normal drainage path through the eustachian tube.Vertigo is more an issue of the inner ear nerve.

Check with ENT: Depends on how much of fluid you have behind the ear, it may need myringotomy( small nick of the ear drum, to let out fluid) , in addition you may need a ear tube. Sometimes it may resolve with medications, or valsava maneuver.

Acoustic neuroma?: Could be a benign growth on the nerve to your eardrum from trauma or previous infections.  Best to see an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.

i have a dull eardrum and fluid  behind my ear caused by a cold and mucus build up few weeks ago. how do i get rid of fluid so ears will stop ringing?

Nasal decongestion: and antihistamine therapy. Use any generic 12 hr. nasal spray for no more than 3 days. Use nasal saline spray or gel every 3-4 hrs.( not applicable if you have hypertension).
Hot steam showers and inhale steam through your nose.
Lastly, use OTC antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin.
