Chiropractor: I would see a chiropractor or physical therapist.  Hopefully you have not continued to do heavy weight lifting but if so you need to stop for a while.   If you are overweight, losing weight helps back pain. If you smoke, quitting also helps. Give physical medicine 6-8 weeks and if still having pain see a specialist.

Check your form: Deadlifts require perfect form. Drop down in weight and focus on form. Use a spotter or a mirror to check your form. In addition, concentrate on core strength to make sure that your core is up to the challenge.

Modify workouts: Dead lifts and squats can put a lot if strain on your lumbar spine.  I would not push the envelope on dead lifts. In general refrain from doing actuvities that exacerbate your pain.  Try other substitute exercises for strength training.

Back strain: Recovery from a strain can take up to 6 weeks; take frequent walks, short jogging and drink plenty of fluids. Sometimes ultrasound and massage makes the pain go back more quickly; phase back into light workouts in 3-4 weeks and you should get better without too much else.

If you are doing an aggressive program, it is best to work with a trainer or have your program directed by a physical therapist, professionals who are trained to monitor muscle usage and strain.  In general, temper your weight program with stretching and flexibility activities and monitor muscle tightness and spasm.

symptoms and return to activities gradually to
prevent reinjury.

Depends: The change in bowel habit is curious; if by this you mean you are having trouble controlling your bowels (i.e., incontinence), go to the er right away. Otherwise, it's difficult to answer the question without knowing more about the back condition. The pain in the left gluteus may be suggestive of pinched nerve, radiculopathy, sciatica, piriformis syndrome. Best to check with your doctor right away.
