what is the best remedy for yellow toe nails?

Not an easy answer: Yellow toenails may be caused by fungus under the nail. Treatment is possible but takes a long time. I would see a podiatrist and have your nails examined to confirm that it is fungus, generally done with a culture of the nail. Treatment can be oral medication, topical antifungual medicine, laser treatment or permanent removal of the nail. Reocuurance is common.

See below: A combination of Vicks vapo rub with a couple of drops of liquid chlorine bleach mixed in (three drops in a teaspoon of vaporub) can help treat toenail fungus. 
Get some latex exam gloves and cut off the fingers. Apply the mix to the toe and cover the toe with the latex 'finger'. It will give a  certain hydraulic pressure to the mix to force it under the nail.

Many: It may be the beginnings of a fungal toenail infection. There are many treatments, including topical solutions, oral medications, laser treatments, surgical removal, homeopathic remedies, etc.  The most used treatment is oral Lamisil (terbinafine) tablets once daily for 90 days.  See a podiatrist for what may be best for your specific needs and expectations.

Listen to body: Since your husband has multiple problems addressing them by lowering carbs and eating 6 meals of healthy foods more vegetables and high quality protein  will improve his ability to eliminate fungus and become healthy. Meanwhile topical vinegar soaks for 5 minutes every day before a shower can help control topical growth of fungus.

Depends on cause: Oftentimes nails yellow because there is something unhealthy (usually fungus) causing, this leads them to crack.  Get them evaluated or if you consider toenail fungus, get treatment (topical or oral).

White toe nail: The blood vessels under your nail in the nail bed is what gives your nails the pink color.  The common cause of white nail is fungus or separation of the nail from the nail bed.  Green/yellow discoloration is usually sign of an infection.  I suggest you see a Podiatrist to have a fungal and bacterial culture done on the nail sample as well as to evaluate the nail to see if it is separated from bed

Fungal nail: Yes, you can apply Lamisil 2-3 x/d directly to the nail.
It can take quite a few months for the new nail to grow in and fungal infection to heal. There is also a high failure rate even if you apply locally. Sometimes 42 d of
Griseofulvin can help if local treatment fails.

The diagnosis : Really can't be made by "just looking". When nails don't look normal many just assume its fungus. Often times it can be subungual keratinazation or bacterial colonization. The only way to differentiate all these is for a doctor to send a specimen to a pathology lab.

injury or trauma to the nail or affected toe, 
fungal infection, 
repeated trauma from running or athletic, activities, 
ill-fitting or tight shoes, 
malignant melanoma (an extremely rare condition)
treatment depends on the cause.
