Not really.: The normal ranges for platelet volume and count are  7.5-11.5 fl (femtolitre), and 130-400 k/ul respectively.  Your volume of 13.7 is higher than this range, but not much.  These are typical ranges, so they can vary.  Unless you have unusual symptoms, or bruising, or clotting issues, like blood taking a long time to clot, there should be no problem, and these are normal values for you.

if a platelet count falls from 120x10^9/l, to 94x10^9/l, to 45x10^9/l, to 24x10^9/l, to17x10^9/l, to 23 x10^9/l and then to 8x10^9/l, how serious is the situation? what should be done?

See hematologist: It is serious. You need to be admitted in the hospital and to see a hematologist. Some blood test, imaging study and a bone marrow biopsy should be done. 
Spontaneous bleeding can happen when your platelet is less than 10k.

16mth old male has platelet count of 509.  are there any serious issues this could be related to? all other counts were normal except mch was 22.4.

Pediatric hemedoc: follow up may be needed if the mild increased platelets is persistent, unexplained or symptomatic. The MCH is near lower limit of normal, about 23-24 in this age group. A word of caution, lab values are never complete, unchanging or diagnostic without the context of the whole, so see a pediatrician or a specialist for a steady analysis and discovery of issues. Most issues in this age are reactive.

Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, these values  per se are not a cause concern. It would have helped to have the complete report.

Depends how: Low and if you have any other abnormalities in your blood work.  Low platelets can cause delay in blood clotting.  If you are not having any problems with bleeding, i would not worry too much.  Follow your doctor's advice and have re-test first before you get too worried.  Lab errors do occur.  Isolated finding of low platelets could mean itp, a treatable disease.

Low platelets: High mpv still suggests compensatory response as opposed to decreased production in setting of eating disorder and possible injury to liver parenchyma. Most likely some type of auroimmune destruction. What are rest of counts and mcv?

i had a serious jaundice 13 years back. after that all normal except that my platelet count is always low with slightly enlarged spleen. what to do?

Unclear...: If you haven't had any complications since then, it may not be too much to worry about.  But if you were having problems, the question would be - is your spleen enlarged because it's harboring platelets or for another reason.  The jaundice 13 years ago may not have anything to do with this.   A consult with a hematologist could shed some light about the low platelet count.

i have severe bruising on my forearms only. i do not take blood thinners. just scratching my arms causes blood lines to appear. platelet count normal.

Several: Aspirin, and other so-called non-steroidal antiinfllammatory agents can lead to easy bruising. Kidney problems can also lead to easy bruising. You should see a health care provider to help you determine what the problem is.
