Magnet, no: Galvanic action, possibly. There would be two dissimilar metals contacting each other, and with the salts in your saliva, you can have an exchange of ions, like a battery. Have your dentist explain this to you further and your treatment options.

My opinion\advice: Technically and theoretically, two dissimilar metals in the presence of saliva which is acidic may create a galvanic response causing some 'shock'. In reality, this has never been a problem for me or my patients. It can happen and is often mild and temporary. Other options are to replace the silver filling with a composite filling, or use a ceramic crown.

i did root canal through the gold crown, permenant fillings were done by dr i  did not know. is root canal final sealing same as regular filling?

Accepted Answer

Yes: A permanent filling after the root canal is needed. In your case a filling will be placed in the access prepared through the crown.  Most likely an amalgam (silver) filling should be placed.  At this procedure the root canal openings will be sealed.  If it is an older crown, you may want to consider replacing it, as a defective crown margin  may have led to the need for canal in the first place.

i have an implant with a gold crown. a tooth next to it is painful when chewing and has a big mercury filling.could those dissimular metals be  cause?

No: The metals are not the source of the pain. Likely the underlying dental decay is worsening. See your dentist to get it checked out.

Be powerful: Is your smile so take responsibility for it in always. Amalgam should not be placed is there a better materials available.  Gold is also being replaced with new ultrahard porcelains.  New techniques have made a world of difference in both function and cosmetics.  Disfiguring materials are unnecessary, and you should be respected in your requests.  Finding a different dentist is a choice.

Safe, yes: If you are asking is it dangerous, the answer is no. But replacing perfectly good fillings (even if they are silver) can cause problems, including cracked teeth and pulpal tissue that becomes non-vital, all due to the trauma of the drill. You accept those risks when replacing a bad filling or fixing a cavity, but do you accept them in this case? Advice is accept the risks or leave them alone.

Both safe: Silver amalgam fillings have been around over 150 years and no conclusive evidence or study ever to my knowledge on them not being safe. Composite fillings newer and considered safe but have not stood the same test of time. Both have had controversies concerning their safety. I would have either in my mouth without any concern! air, water. Food and just living is not 100% safe.

Cast restorations: Gold or porcelain inlays/onlays can also be used... But they are more expensive than composite or amalgam fillings.

Better options: Internationally, the safety of amalgam is highly debated.  There are other materials that better treat the tooth and avoid the controversy.  I would use stress reduced composite resins or porcelains that reconstruct the tooth biomimetically.  Less structure will be removed and the tooth will regain lost strength (unlike amalgam).  It will have a more natural appearance, too.

Yes and no.: That would not be my first choice. Holistically speaking, you might do better with a white composite, bpa free.
