Better options: Internationally, the safety of amalgam is highly debated. There are other materials that better treat the tooth and avoid the controversy. I would use stress reduced composite resins or porcelains that reconstruct the tooth biomimetically. Less structure will be removed and the tooth will regain lost strength (unlike amalgam). It will have a more natural appearance, too.

Yes: Don't worry just avoid drinking a lot of hot liquid because it tends to release more vapor. That being said, the type of mercury released in ethyl-mercury which is the least harmful and only in minute amounts. If your child has health problems it wont be from your fillings. Just remember to eat rite(avoid sugar) and take your prenatal vitamins. Just one pop a day would be much more harmful!

No worries! 8 or 35?: Until 1987, most dentists and their chair side assistants did not wear gloves, so amalgam (silver, tin, copper, mercury, etc.) was handled routinely. Dental personnel, many of whom were pregnant and unaware, handled the stuff regularly in the more "risky" first trimester. No studies of which I am aware ever showed an illness correlation. (any help out there?) your unnecessary worry is worse.
