Essential tremor: Not to recommend excessive alcohol, but if your tremor transiently stops when you consume it, then any of the typical medications we prescribe can help but they all (propranolol, primidone, gabapentin, clonazepam) have side effects.  There are natural remedies, less effective often.  I avoid skullcap and valerian but they are recommended by many.  Check my other answers on tremor for others.  Dbs.

Essential tremor: I get that question a lot and honestly do not have a great option for you.  Sometimes magnesium can help, dosing with mg malate 400 mg per day if tolerated.  Some people have used herbs like lemon balm, passion flower, and lavender and there are advocates for a number of homeopathic remedies.  Deep brain stimulation is an excellent treatment if you are willing to consider.

No but managable: Essential tremors cannot be cured in total, but managed by betablockers and similar medications.

No: It is unknown to neuroscientist how to prevent as we still do not know what causes it. Some genetic factors are known.

Accepted Answer

No cure: Some patients require only intermittent tremor reduction, such as when attending a meeting or engaging in a social activity. For these patients, a cocktail or beer prior to the activity may be sufficient. An alternative is Propranolol (10-40 mg) approximately one half hour prior to the event. Alcohol consumption is not an appropriate maintenance therapy for patients who seek tremor reduction throu.

Maybe: If you look at tremor getting worse with caffeine or stimulants, and better with alcohol or sedatives, you might consider that otc preps, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or dramamine could sedate and thus subdue the tremor.  Maybe some homeopathic remedies can help.  I am being creative here, as there is no real formulary of alternative meds for essential tremor, but why not try the above.  Might work.

Wrong question: Smoking cigs is a very, very bad idea whether or not you have essential tremor. You shouldn't be asking. If you are already an addict, please get help stopping. Best wishes.

Cause unknown: Some hereditary linkage but cause unkown.  Not caused by stress, but increased stress may make the tremor more noticeable.
