Amino acid: it is an amino acid ( body protein) and is not harmful-better off using topical cold sore medical and oral zince tablets.

i get 3-5 cold sores a year, i wish there was a cure. does lysine supplements really work at reducing outbreaks? is it safe to take lysine long-term? are there other supplements other then antiviral medicine and creams?

: Lysine has no effect at all against herpes. Despite online claims, there is no proved reduction in either frequency or severity of outbreaks. It's not quite quackery; in the laboratory, lysine slightly inhibits HSV. 3-5 outbreaks a year is unusually frequent for oral herpes; you could try sunblock, since UV light can trigger outbreaks.

Lysine for Cold Sore: Yes.  Simply yes.  But, if the sore re-occurs frequently one may need a true anti-viral medication to treat this such as Acyclovir or valacyclovir.

I would advise you to see a health care provider who is aware of the tremendous changes in the understanding and treatment of herpes that have occurred in the past few years.

Everything we knew about herpes seems to have changed in the recent years.

Stress: Stress levels increasing often can precipate outbreaks of herpetic lesions.  If these outbreaks started around the same time as some new stress in your life, then they may be due to the stress hormones in your body suppressing your immune system.

1000-3000 mg/day: There have been only a few studies on this. They do show that l-lysine is highly effective for preventing cold sores. Some studies used doses of 1000 mg 3x/day while others used as little as 1000 mg/day. I usually advise 1500 mg/day. If you still get cold sores try raising the dose- lysine is quite safe.

Lysine id good: Yes.  Lysine is very useful in most people.  Also avoid whole wheat bread, nuts and arginine which grow viruses.

Lysine: Brief supplementation w lysine 1, 000mg orally 3x a day at the onset, can also hasten healing.

Irrelevant: There no cure for HSV infection and often stress is an aggravating factor, but not food. Cold sores generally clear up without treatment within 10-14 days. Good luck

ABSOLUTELY!!: I think L-lysine is a very effective anti-viral supplement and you should start taking it the minute you feel a tingle of an outbreak, or whenever your immune system is knocked down, like with a cold or extreme stress.  Only use it for 7-10 day periods, however, because you can down-regulate your immune system with constant use.
